Competitor Analysis
RESEARCH
My competitor analysis involves exploring how existing barbershop apps cater to users seeking convenient and efficient booking solutions. Specifically, I examine how competitors like Booksy, Vagaro, and Fresha create intuitive and user-friendly appointment scheduling experiences, focusing on features like ease of navigation, customization, and overall user satisfaction.

After conducting competitor analysis, I decided to engage directly with a barbershop owner to uncover real-world issues. This discussion provided valuable insights into the challenges faced daily. Below is a snapshot of our conversation:
Identifying Problems
RESEARCH
It’s stressful for us too. Managing this chaos takes time away from focusing on delivering a good service. We’re losing potential loyal customers because of this
How does this impact the client experience ?
And how does this affect your business overall ?

The biggest issue is when multiple clients arrive at the same time. Even with appointments, walk-ins can cause confusion, and we’re left juggling between them
Clients get frustrated when they feel ignored or have to wait too long. Sometimes, they leave unhappy or don’t return 😭
To define the problem, the barbershop owner highlighted the need for better appointment management and clearer communication with clients. Features like organized booking, a waitlist system, and real-time updates could reduce frustration and improve customer satisfaction.

Habib is dedicated to the success of his tech startup and is passionate about staying at the forefront of industry trends and innovations. He thrives on entrepreneurship and is determined to build a thriving business. As a co-founder, he actively seeks opportunities to network, engage with potential investors, and collaborate with like-minded individuals who share his enthusiasm for growth and innovation.
Needs
as an entrepreneur, needs a system that helps him efficiently manage his time, balancing the demands of running a startup with his personal activities. He requires a reliable and easy-to-use service for booking appointments, allowing him to avoid disruptions in his busy schedule. Clear communication with service providers is essential, as it enables him to plan his day and avoid unnecessary stress. Having access to real-time updates and available appointment slots would help him stay organized and minimize any interruptions to his work.
Pain Points
Habib faces significant pain points when it comes to booking appointments. Long wait times at barbershops are a major frustration, especially when his schedule is tight. He also struggles with unorganized appointment systems that lack clarity and real-time notifications, making it difficult to know when to expect his service. This disorganization not only wastes his time but also creates unnecessary stress, as he has to constantly manage these issues on top of his business responsibilities.

After identifying common pain points, the solution includes a user-friendly booking system with real-time updates, a queue management feature, and automated notifications. It also offers an in-app chat feature for communication and a secure payment system for easy transactions. For the owner, the app provides admin controls to manage appointments and track customer preferences, ensuring a smooth experience for both clients and the barbershop.
Creating a Solution
IDEATION
To immerse myself in the barbershop’s identity, I created a moodboard that explores their style, including typography, colors, and imagery. This helps me make usability improvements while staying true to the barbershop’s aesthetic and brand essence.
Moodboard
IDEATION

After conceptualizing a design direction, I began crafting mid-fidelity wireframes to visualize my ideas for the app. This focused on the booking process, queue management, and other key features essential for improving the user experience.
Mid-Fidelity
IDEATION

The main screen provides quick access to deals, recommended barbers, a filter to sort by specialty and reviews, and the store's location, ensuring a seamless and personalized booking experience.
Main Screens
The barber page offers detailed information, including an about section, a list of services, working hours, and customer reviews, allowing users to make informed decisions and easily book their preferred barber.

FINAL DESIGNS
The appointment page streamlines the booking process by allowing users to select their preferred date and time, choose from available services, and complete the payment seamlessly. Once confirmed, users receive a detailed invoice, ensuring a smooth and transparent experience.
Side Navigation

After completing this barbershop app case study, I reflected on how much I have grown as a UX/UI designer. I refined my technical skills, utilizing tools like grids, auto-layout, and consistent design systems to create a polished and cohesive interface. I also improved my interaction design abilities, focusing on realistic user flows and anticipating how users would navigate the app. Most importantly, I strengthened my design thinking by prioritizing user needs and incorporating feedback into every stage of the process. This experience has been invaluable, and I’m excited to bring these skills to my future projects!
